We are incredibly proud to introduce Mark Horo as the Coaching Mentor for Māori Rugby League NSW, a role that perfectly aligns with his deep connection to our kaupapa and his invaluable contributions to the community.
Uncle Mark’s journey with Māori Rugby League NSW began from the very start of our kaupapa. He was more than just a participant in those early conversations - he was a driving force, laying down the foundations that have allowed us to flourish. His commitment to nurturing young Māori talent has always been at the core of his work, helping players grow both in skill and in their cultural identity.
His rugby league career commands immense respect. As a former New Zealand international, he played 16 tests for the Kiwis, showcasing his skills on some of the sport's biggest stages including the 1988 and 1995 Rugby League World Cups. He played for top clubs like the Parramatta Eels, Western Suburbs Magpies and Auckland Warriors, leaving an indelible mark as a versatile and formidable player.
Over the years Uncle Mark has transitioned into a role that has had a lasting impact - mentoring and coaching our junior players. His influence has been instrumental in shaping our junior development programs, which continue to thrive thanks to his guidance. Through his work, Uncle Mark has instilled the values of whanaungatanga (kinship) and manākitanga (hospitality) into our kaupapa.
As a mentor, Uncle Mark’s respect and influence extend far beyond the field. He embodies the principles of our kaupapa and serves as an inspiration to everyone involved in Māori Rugby League NSW. We are honoured to have him in this pivotal role, guiding our teams with the same passion and wisdom that have defined his career. Under his mentorship, we are confident that our teams will continue to grow, succeed and uphold the proud traditions of Māori Rugby League NSW. Mauri Ora!

Fundraising Initiatives and Shared Investment
We are creating fundraising opportunities that all participants, both players and staff, are encouraged to take part in. These efforts will help players raise the necessary funds to cover their selection fees, reducing financial pressure on their immediate whānau, while also engaging the wider community in supporting the kaupapa.
Our goal is to ensure that participants can focus on their performance without the concern of financial constraints. By fostering an inclusive kaupapa, we create a community where everyone is supported, and no one is left behind.
Additionally, we are committed to developing a sustainable model, where funds raised directly benefit the players and any surplus is reinvested into broader kaupapa pathways. This includes the Queensland Māori tournament in October, future ANZMRL tournaments and other development and representative opportunities. Through shared efforts, we can ensure the ongoing growth and success of all participants.
Participation for All
All registered players, whether selected or not, will be encouraged to participate in team activities, cultural events and haka performances throughout the Heritage Campaign. Players wearing their training kit will also receive free entry to all games.
